Sabro Express (Hazy IPA with Pineapple)

Tune in, hop on, hop out.

Sabro Express is a joint venture with our good friends at Deschutes Brewery in Bend, Oregon. A homegrown, hazy melange of bright citrus and juicy tropical fruit flavors, this Hazy IPA takes heady mega-rips of fresh pineapple to put you in an über-luscious cloud of puff-puff-pass. Read on to get full scoop on our newest collab brew!

This brew is a collaborative effort with another Deschutes Brewery. Can you talk about how this partnership came to be?

Sure! We’ve actually been releasing this one on draft for a few years. We have a ton of respect for Deschutes, and we’re really excited for the opportunity to collaborate. We liked the brew so much we decided to graduate it to cans this year!

Talk about the name a bit.

The focus is on the Sabro hop, which is packed with loads of tropical fruit flavor waiting to be unlocked. The addition of pineapple juice accentuates these qualities. By swapping the word “Sabro” with “pineapple,” we’re making a not-so-stealthy reference to a certain well-known plant strain.

What are the notable characteristics of this beer?

Sabro hops are known to bring not only massive notes of pineapple and tropical fruit, but also hints of coconut. By combining fresh pineapple juice with this hop varietal, we created a brew that draws out intense fruit flavors that wouldn’t be possible with hops alone. The full, juice-like body helps to enhance these fruit flavors, while a dry finish leads to a clean, refreshing finish.

What makes you want to drink this beer?

The combination of Sabro and fresh pineapple leads to a beer that drinks like a colada, with hop-derived coconut and a full, juice-like body. This flavor profile is perfect for a hot summer day by the pool, or to cool down while sitting in the shade on your deck. This beer also would pair great with grilled fish or chicken, making it the perfect cookout beer.

Appearance: Gold color with heavy haze and thick, white foam.

Aroma: Ripe pineapple, fresh coconut, and juicy orange.

Taste: Fresh pineapple juice and hop derived coconut flavors lead to a perception of sweetness that quickly fades to a dry finish.

Mouthfeel: Full-bodied and juice-like, with sweet fruity tropical notes and a clean, dry finish.

Overall:  The addition of fresh pineapple juice combines perfectly with the notes of coconut and orange juice from the use of Sabro hops. These fruity flavors and aromas create a colada-like beer that manages to finish clean and dry, with lingering tropical and citrus notes.

What foods would pair well with Sabro Express?

This beer would go really well with Thai coconut curry, or a coconut based ceviche.

Ideal glassware for Sabro express?

An IPA glass with an inward curve would perfectly capture and intensify all the tropical aromas.
