McCool is an Irish Red Ale. Tell us a little bit about the style, and why it fits so well in our seasonal lineup.

Irish Red Ale is a traditional European style with a nebulous history that dates back to at least the 14th century, centered around the town of Kilkenny. The addition of small amounts of roasted malt adds the deep red color, and also contributes flavors like caramel, coffee and toffee. These rich, toasty malt flavors are perfect for the colder weather.

Can you give a little background on the name?

This beer is named after Finn McCool, a legendary hero from Irish mythology. His first fabled feat happened at only 10 years old, when Finn vanquished a fire-breathing demon that had been terrorizing the ancient Irish capital of Tara for decades. With his heritage now restored, Finn went on to lead a life loaded with heroic deeds and dramatic romances. From building the Giant’s Causeway to creating the Isle of Man, his legend spans the whole of Ireland.  Some even say that McCool never actually died, and lives on to this day…

What are the notable characteristics of this beer?

McCool is loaded with toasty malt flavors from the addition of roasted malt, which also gives the beer its beautiful ruby-red hue. Malt-derived flavors of caramel, coffee, and toasted bread are enhanced by moderate sweetness and just enough balancing bitterness. The 6.2% abv is slightly higher than traditional Irish Red Ales, making it the perfect break from the typical high-octane winter offerings.

What makes you want to drink McCool?

This beer is a rich, flavorful brew with a high level of drinkability. The body is medium-light, avoiding the cloying sweetness that might be found in other malt-forward ales.
