Hustle (Red Lager)

Reviews are done by Jim Matt, our Chief Science Officer, who is also a veteran FoBAB judge, GABF judge, and BJCP Master judge.

Hustle (4.8%, 17 IBU) is a smooth and sessionable Red Lager built for 90 degree days at the ballpark. Low in ABV and bitterness, Hustle offers delicate hop notes with a light, biscuity malt backbone. We’re looking forward to cracking open a few of these red beauties on Opening Day.

Malts: Red-X, Maris Otter, Acid Malt

Hops: Bravo, Hallertau Blanc

Hustle is a Red Lager. What are the defining characteristics of that style?

Without being too cheeky: it is red, and fermented with a lager (bottom fermenting) yeast strain.

Hustle used to be a Rye Pale Ale. Why the change?

The old Hustle was quite popular, and we here (at Rhinegeist) really enjoyed it. However, as a beer for Opening Day, we felt that a simpler, cleaner, and more sessionable beer would be more appropriate.

What are the notable characteristics of this beer?

It is red, low in bitterness, less than 5% ABV, smooth, easy drinking, and has a clean lager character.

What about Hustle gets you excited?

It is another beer that was the subject of experimentation. Being a scientist, I love experiments.

Appearance: Amber/red, fairly clear. Persistent off-white head. Medium carbonation.

Aroma: No fruity esters, medium-low malt aroma (slightly bready and biscuity). Light fruity hop aroma.

Taste: Medium malt flavor (light biscuit, cracker and bread). Low fruity hop flavor, no fruity esters. Medium low hop bitterness, dry finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, medium carbonation, low astringency.

Overall: A light (in flavor), crushable Red Lager that belies its color with a lightness on the palate.

What foods would pair well with Hustle?

Pasta Bolognese or a ballpark hot dog.

Ideal glassware for Hustle?

Standard pint glass.
