Cloud Harvest 01 (Unfiltered Juicy IPA)

Volcanoes dormant for now, vines hang like leafy leis across blue skies while slack key guitar and ukulele riffs bend dreamily through ad hoc coconut radios. Aloha’aina hoparinos.

Cloud Harvest 01 is the first iteration in our Unfiltered Juicy IPA Series. Talk about what we’re exploring with this series, and what this first batch brings to the table.

New hop varieties are being developed at a faster rate than ever, each bringing exciting new flavors and aromas. Cloud Harvest is the culmination of internal experimentation with these new hops, meant to showcase novel, unique and delicious combinations. Cloud Harvest 01 is a perfect example, showcasing interesting notes of pineapple and coconut.

These new school juicy IPAs go by several different names––Hazy IPAs, New England-Style IPAs, Unfiltered IPAs, etc. What does it mean to say Cloud Harvest is an Unfiltered Juicy IPA?

With this being a new series, we didn’t want to pigeon-hole ourselves into having to follow any rigid guidelines. We know we want them all to be juicy IPAs that showcase hops. To achieve these juicy flavors from hops, we add them during fermentation and allow the yeast to interact with the hops. Filtering the beer would potentially remove some of this flavor, as well as the fuller body that this process creates. This fuller body enhances the juiciness. Though Hazy IPA and NE IPA are brewed using similar techniques, they both are a much more defined style, and would have potentially limited future innovation in the series.

What makes you want to drink this beer?

This beer is loaded with flavor and aroma. Juicy notes of pineapple, coconut and orange hit you in the nose the moment you crack the can. It pours bright gold with some haze and a fluffy white head. Bitterness is held in check, really letting those juicy, fruity flavors dominate.

What are some of your favorite IPAs that lean into a juicier, softer hop profile?

This style wouldn’t exist had The Alchemist not blessed us with Heady Topper, which remains a world class example. Bell’s Official is great, as are any of the Enjoy By Series brewed by Stone. Locally, Listermann excels at brewing juicy, hoppy beer.

This would go really well with some mango habanero wings.

A specialized IPA glass will concentrate those juicy aromas even more, but even a standard pint glass let’s them shine.
